Shrieking wildly and flashing stiletto-like incisors, a male gelada crouches to block another male's attack. "The screeching, catlike pose is basically defensive," says Hunter. The gelada at right had gotten too close to a female in his assailant's unit. Males battle aggressively for the coveted position of family male, but they use their teeth mostly to intimidate, rarely to cause harm. |
