Submission Requirements
National Geographic invites interested parties to submit a digital photograph or video for possible publication on ngm.com. To submit a photograph or video ("Submission") for possible posting on ngm.com, click Submit and follow the step-by-step directions on that page. NGS retains full editorial control over the selection of, and the decision not to select, any particular Submission for publication.

1. Technical Specifications
You must be 18 years of age or older to submit a photograph or video. If you are younger than 18 years and wish to make a Submission, you may have your parent or legal guardian submit it on your behalf; in that case, in the Submission description the parent or guardian should note the photographer's name, age and relationship to the submitter.

Photo submissions must be in JPEG (.jpg or .jpeg) digital format, at least 1,600 pixels wide if a horizontal image or 1,600 pixels tall if a vertical image. Please provide only the original, unmodified camera image. Video submissions may be in avi, mov, wmv, mpeg4, mp3, wma, aif or wav formats.

National Geographic will consider no Submissions that it identifies as obscene, provocative, or otherwise containing objectionable content.

2. Rights Granted
By submitting a photograph or video for consideration, you warrant and represent that the Submission is your own original work (or, in the case of submitting on behalf of a child, the original work of your child) and that you alone (or your child) own copyright to the Submission, that it is an authentic and accurate depiction of the subject matter presented, that no other party has any right, title, claim or interest in the Submission, and that you have obtained all third party releases and permissions necessary for our use. If National Geographic receives a complaint that substantially questions the reliability of any of the above warranties, we reserve the right to remove or delete the Submission.

You grant to National Geographic Society and its subsidiaries and licensees ("NGS") the following rights:
  1. a royalty-free, worldwide license to display, distribute, reproduce and create derivatives of the Submission, in whole or in part, without further review or participation from you, in any medium now existing or subsequently developed, in connection with Smart Alex or any promotion, derivative or extension of Smart Alex ("Campaign"). This license is for ten years, with the right to archive online uses indefinitely, and includes, but is not limited to, the right to post your Submission on ngm.com and other National Geographic branded sites and solicit comments and voting from the public, the right to publish a book, calendar, wallpaper or similar product featuring select Campaign submissions, and the right to present an exhibit of select Campaign submissions; and

  2. a worldwide, ten-year license to display, distribute, reproduce and create derivatives of the Submission, in whole or in part, without further review or participation from you, in any medium now existing or subsequently developed, in connection with editorial, commercial, promotional and trade uses unrelated to Smart Alex, based on the applicable product rate or page rate for each use as established by the NGS division, subsidiary, affiliate, joint venture or licensee at the time of publication. You are responsible for providing NGS with up-to-date contact information to enable payments to you under this part (b). The license herein includes the right to archive online uses indefinitely.
