Dispatch #9
Night and Day

This is one in a series of email dispatches from Africa written this fall by photographer Michael Nichols to his picture editor, Kathy Moran.

Photo: Chaotic wildebeest river crossing
“The wildebeest cross the Mara River with a very careful start followed by full-throttle chaos.”

Dear Kathy,

The wildebeest migration swings wildly between two opposites: the orderliness of a swarm of ants and the utter disorder of Nairobi traffic.

Everything is consumed here—and quickly. The night is never quiet and the days are strangely like a sleeping haze. Night is day.
